How
to have a rad retro Christmas
Run- Nov28.2009
Fifties sense:
Looking forward to the holidays sometimes requires looking back
By Carolyn McTighe, SUN MEDIA
There's a revival going on.
And I'm not just talking about my year-long foray into self-imposed domesticity, but
the love for the era that has resulted in revival of everything retro from TV's Mad Men to cocktail parties to Life Magazine's
printing of vintage Playboy photos.
So in honour of the upcoming holiday season, and 1950s' kitsch seekers who share
my soft spot for this kooky decade, I'm gonna let you in on how to find those treasures.
Whether you're a gal who loves
the vintage look of Kromex candlesticks or you're a guy whose been inspired by the stylish furnishings on Mad Men, I know
exactly where you need to go to create your very own one-of-a-kind retro look. So get your wish lists ready and check out
a few of my favourite fifties "must haves."
Often, when it comes to finding the kitsch you don't have to look
much further than your computer screen. Retro retailers have embraced the Internet, offering everything from fashion to home
decor.
If you're looking for a vintage Charley Harper silk screen print, there is a website that will undoubtedly have
it (and just to prove my point you can find one of these famous prints at CharleyHarperArtStudio.com)
Some of my favourite 1950s items have to be for the kitchen. Since most families spent a majority of their time hanging
out in this part of the house there is an abundance of unique memorabilia available online. One website worth looking at is
the retro shop DoWahDiddy.com. This site has everything you'll need to turn your kitchen into a hip hangout.
Among some of my favourites are their
vintage wooden serving bowls, bread loaf holders and "Dazey" can openers.
In addition to their vintage kitchen
kitsch, they also have a wide selection of furniture and knickknacks for almost every room of your house.
For the perfect
bedroom decor you might want to check out their Kent Coffey dresser and matching nightstands, or their end tables with hairpin
legs. They also sell vintage mirrored coffee tables, Toastmaster fans, and battery operated light-up View-Masters.
Another
great site to look for 1950s chotchkes is Classic-Modern.co.uk Classic Modern offers classic vintage 50s, 60s and 70s lighting, textiles, ceramics, rugs, plastics, glass, and metalware.
One
of my favourites is their Drioli Company handmade ceramic bottles. These bottles were first made in the early 1950's as liquor
flasks, but have gained a great deal of popularity among vintage collectors over the last few years. A few other items you
might want to check out are their red and white striped glass bowls and Danish rosewood serving dishes.
As
I've found out, you can't be a 1950s woman without an apron. Though my quest for the perfect apron has been a struggle, I'm
happy to announce that I've found a place that makes vintage aprons that make you feel like a flirty vixen rather than a dowdy
housewife.
CandyAppleAprons.com is a Canadian-based business that sells retro aprons that can be custom ordered from a selection of
fabrics. These feminine and colourful aprons help make any day spent in the kitchen a little bit cheerier.
And
last but not least, for anyone out their looking for a little kooky to add to their collection of 1950s kitsch, you'll want
to visit the aptly named KookyKitsch.com.
This site has everything from Moo Cow Creamers and Rice-a-Roni Potholders to Bisquick Metal Recipe Boxes and Welch's
Jelly Glasses etched with the face of Howdy Doody.
If zany is what your in the market for, then this is one online store
you're going to want to stop at.
